The other vacinity with grandeur on the Museumplein, where also the City Museum is situated, is the Van Gogh Museum that was designed by the renowned Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973. Here you will find the most comprehensive Van Gogh collection in the world: around 200 paintings, 500 drawings, hundreds of letters (especially from Vincent to his brother Theo), his Japanese prints and works by contemporaries. The arrangement follows the development of Van Gogh in chronological order, divided into five periods to the residence of the painter: the Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint-Remy and Auvers-sur-Oise. Of The Potato Eaters through Sunflowers to the tortured self-portraits. Many of the exchange exhibitions explore the interaction and/or mutual influence between Van Gogh and his contemporaries.

On Friday, the museum is open until 22.00, usually there is therefore an activity planned in the hall of the museum.
